On Wednesday, USL reported that Orange County SC players Jerry Van Ewijk, and Ami Pineda have been suspended for multiple games after a scuffle between them and Portland Timbers 2 defender Lamar Baptista on Saturday’s 3-3 draw.
For Van Ewijk, he has been suspended up to five games, and as for Pineda, six. Without disregarding a deserved punishment for Van Ewijk and Pineda, the length of the suspensions do seem to be quite harsh, but more importantly head coach Logan Pause will now have to find an effective starting eleven for Orange County, specifically in the attack and midfield now that his team’s leading goal-scorer, and midfielder will not be available for the remainder of July. In fact, if needed, Van Ewijk will be back in time to take on LA Galaxy II Aug. 2, and Aug. 5 for Pineda when Orange County meets San Antonio FC.
To take everything into account, incidents like these can be dreadful because of how much value one point contains for a team like Orange County who is pushing towards a higher rank in the standings, so to keep the players aware of every situation is crucial.
Lastly, there is no doubt that Orange County can over come this challenge with hard work and discipline from the players, but also continuing to learn from every experience that comes their way.
Next, Orange County SC will host Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, July 8 at Orange County Great Park at 7 pm PT.
