The last time Orange County SC met Tulsa Roughnecks FC had been on the road earlier this season having lost 4-0, but this time around the team managed to take away a vital point in a 0-0 tie at their new home ground debut, Championship Stadium. Here are three takeaways from Orange County SC’s performance on Tuesday night.
Wuilito Fernandes On Defense
For the second time this season, Orange County head coach Logan Pause decided to start forward Wuilito Fernandes on the defensive side of the ball, who normally is the number nine work horse up top for the home side. Fernandes had himself a decent performance, he was vocal with teammates Roy Meeus and Oscar Sorto in order to stay intact, as well as some positives in terms of man-marking, however found himself at times making minor errors such as short passes that would be intercepted, and not enough patience when it came to vision. For the most part, it is a challenging transition considering we are more than half way into the season, and not having a whole a lot of experience at the center back position in the USL, but if Logan Pause sees a future that Fernandes can play on both sides of the ball whether it would be consistently or not, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Zach Kobayashi Provides A Spark In The Midfield
Youngster Zach Kobayashi made just his sixth appearance for Orange County this season, and is undoubtedly showcasing all of his abilities to head coach Logan Pause as a trustworthy option in the midfield. The 19-year-old midfielder caused some sloppy defending on Tulsa’s side of the pitch through his dribbling, play making ability, and skill on the ball. If given more minutes as of recent, Kobayashi could be a spark in the midfield for Orange County moving forward.
Within the last five games for Orange County, they have only managed to score two goals, having been shut out three out of the five fixtures, including Tuesday. This is one of those concerns on the attacking side for Orange County where you not only hope, but expect to see the team to catch fire at any time because of how long they have been on a drought. The talent and depth of this team has been proven throughout the season, so whether it is bad form, formation changes, or switching players positions, it is definitely raising some concerns as Logan Pause looks for an answer to this situation. A player such as Jerry van Ewijk, who started at center-forward for tonight’s match, plays much better as a winger while Fernandes is their to hold the opponent’s back-line, but without the support of Fernandes up top, van Ewijk will tend to struggle.
