As part of its 2017 United States preseason tour, Manchester United will play five clubs throughout the U.S.
Man U will then take part in the U.S.-based portion of the International Champions Cup against Premier League rivals Manchester City (July 20) in a yet-to-be-decided venue, Real Madrid (July 23) in Santa Clara, CA and Barcelona (July 26) in Washington D.C.
United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward spoke about the Red Devils’ trip to Los Angeles:
“Jose Mourinho, the team and everybody at Manchester United are excited to be staging the pre-season tour in the USA this summer,” said Manchester United’s Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward. “Los Angeles is a city that always gives the warmest of welcomes and we are looking forward to renewing acquaintances with our friends at LA Galaxy.”
Los Angeles will be in the middle of its MLS campaign when they face off against the Old Trafford tenants. The Galaxy could also be without some key players as some of their stars will be on national team duty for the Confederations Cup (June 17-July 2) and the Gold Cup (July 7- July 26). Giovani dos Santos presumably will be with Mexico while Jermaine Jones, Sebastian Lletget and Gyasi Zardes will be with the U.S. Mens national team.
Nevertheless the Galaxy are equally excited to be hosting such a prominent football club:
“We are excited to host an iconic English team like Manchester United here at StubHub Center,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein.” As the flagship team in Major League Soccer, it is important for us to continue to host big games and bring top-level soccer to the city of Los Angeles. We are looking forward to July 15 as we host a world-class event for our fans.”
The Red Devils on the other hand could be bringing in some of their heavy artillery to Los Angeles with the World’s most expensive player Paul Pogba surely to be on the roster, David De Gea, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to name a few.
Veterans Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic could also make an appearance at StubHub, but with which club? Both players have been linked to the Galaxy before and the MLS would be in the midst of their secondary transfer window. Would be interesting to see what transpires in the summer.
The Galaxy will look to avenge the 7-0 thrashing they received in 2014 at the Rose Bowl when they squared off against the Red Devils.
