In a 5-0 trouncing, LAFC and their fans literally shook the San Jose Earthquakes and their stadium. One player in particular lead Los Angeles in the route of their Northern California rivals.
Carlos Vela scored a stunning hat trick spurring LAFC to a decisive win and giving LAFC 13 points in their first five games putting them firmly in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot.
Each Vela goal more stunning than the next, almost immediately he made his presence known scoring eight minutes in when Mario Vega misplayed a pass back, and Vela tapped the ball in for the easiest goal of his career.
With a 2-0 lead courtesy of Steven Beitashour, Vela scored just before halftime lashing at the ball through the defenders leg and past Vega.
After a 3-0 lead, the rout was on and Vela would save his best for last.
In the 66th minute Vela found himself with the ball outside the box where he decided to get ambitious.
Vela took one touch put the ball on his left foot and curled a shot past Vega into the right side of the goal.
Diego Rossi put in a another score two minutes later putting the game out of reach. Coach Bob Bradley summed up what Vela has been doing this year to create his great performances.
“Instead of just coming back for every ball, he’s found a really good balance between being on the move more and I think as a team we’ve done a better job finding ways to get him moving forward and that’s very important.”
With the hat trick Carlos Vela moved into the top spot as the league leader in goals (6) and is tied with others for the league lead in assists (3).
It’s early but with his outstanding play on the pitch Vela is a front-runner for league MVP.
The season still has a long way to go, but the early verdict on LAFC, they’ll go as far as Carlos Vela takes them.
