The LA Galaxy announced back on February 22, that they will hold their first-ever tryouts in England to recruit more young talent for their USL affiliate Galaxy II. Tryouts will be held in London at The Hive on May 31 and June 1, then at the University of Manchester Armitage Sports Centre on June 3 and 4.
TV personality Mark Wright will assist the five-time champions try to discover the next unknown star. He is hoping a player that attends the trials will follow a similar path as Leicester City star Jamie Vardy who was a virtual unknown until he burst onto the scene to become a potent striker.
“I always go back to Jamie Vardy. He didn’t really get noticed until he was 24, 25 when he was playing in the National League. Now, he;s an absolute star nationally and in the Premier League, “Wright told Sky Sports News HQ.
It’s hard to be noticed and I personally got released at 19 from Tottenham. I didn’t know what way to turn, where I was going to go and what I was going to do.
If this system was available back then, it would have been a dream come true. For me, to potentially go to California and play in the MLS, a league that is fast growing and looking like it will be one of the biggest in the world in the future.
If that was on offer to me at 18, 19, 20 that’s where I would have turned.”
The tryouts will be open to all 18-25 year olds with possibly ten players selected to continue further trials at StubHub Center in Los Angeles. A maximum of three players could earn a professional contract with Los Dos and possibly ascend to the first team.
It’s an innovative way for the Galaxy to stock pile talent to the organization and continue its new philosophy of promoting from within. Some current players that have signed onto the first team from Los Dos include Jack McBean, Ariel Lassiter, Nathan Smith, Daniel Steres and Dave Romney to name a few.
Los Angeles has welcomed numerous English players like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole and perhaps could pave the way for more young European footballers searching for an opportunity to make it to the pros.
